The Met Gala is known for its artsy, extravagant fashion. The theme for the 2024 Met Gala was announced on November 8. The theme will
be “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” and the gala will take place on May 6 of next year.
2023’s Met Gala was certainly memorable, from Kim Kardashian’s pearl gown to Jared Leto’s cat costume, but what exactly does this 2024 theme mean and what can we expect?
“Spanning over 400 years of fashion history, the pieces will include designs by Schiaparelli, Dior, Givenchy, and more,” said Vogue.
They will also be reportedly including old pieces which are too fragile to wear again by reviving them with technology such as AI and CGI.
According to People, “The walk-through will also feature everything from a 17th century English Elizabethan-era bodice to 21st century
works by modern-day fashion industry tastemakers.” Evidently, the ensembles will feature a great amount of history and historical styles.
The theme does, however, leave a question: what connection does “Sleeping Beauty” have? The Hollywood Reporter says that some garments in the Met’s Costume Institute exhibit, on which the gala’s theme is based, are, “too fragile to hang upright, lest they disintegrate. They will lie in glass cases, like Sleeping Beauty herself.”
Although the guest list remains unannounced so far, the usual yearly guests are still expected to attend, such as Lady Gaga, Rhianna, and the Kardashians. The 2024 Met Gala is still quite a while away, so more details are surely coming.
